A Slight Change Of Plans
My computer is behaving very strangely at the moment - occasionally working (such as now), but programs crashing and the Finder having very strange symptoms. Apple’s tech support has suggested that I should do a clean reinstall since I had not done that after the main hard drive was recently replaced. Unfortunately, my much-used Leopard install disks have chosen this moment to go missing.
As such, I can’t reinstall until the Apple replacement Leopard disks arrive and until that happens I can do almost nothing with my computer as it’s liable to stop working at any moment. So ATMac will unfortunately be on a short hiatus for the “three days to 2 weeks” they quote that the new install disks will take to arrive.
Please chat amongst yourselves in the mean time. I’d love to see some introductions in the comments here when I come back - who are you, how did you find ATMac, and what’s your interest in Apple and disabilities and assistive technology? Don’t be shy!
- Ricky Buchanan

I am a special education teacher in an elementary school. I found ATmac in a search for assistive technology. It’s been really interesting to read the variety of software for my students. I am particularly intersted in resources for students struggling to read and write.
Thank you for being such a great resource!
I enjoy sharing your info with my colleagues.
Ok, I’ll start!
I work as an Academic Technologist at a small liberal arts college. I have a special interest in assistive technology and so have been helping our Disability Services Coordinator with use of Kurzweil and Dragon Naturally Speaking for LD. I am currently learning sign language (my sister-in-law is deaf, but lives far from me), and have some limited experience working with JAWS and other TTS technologies. My main motivation comes from a recognition that far too little attention is paid to assistive technologies, and a desire to change that in any way I can.
I can’t remember how I found ATMac, probably Google. But I love it!! I find it incredibly helpful and forward postings to others at the college on a regular basis. Thank you so much, Ricky, for setting it up and all those who post all of the useful articles!!
My name is Dana. I represent DynaVox Technologies, a leader in AAC devices and technology. This site/blog is very helpful to the Assistive Technology community, and I am pleased to have come across it!
Looks like my computer won’t be operating right until Monday… it’s limping along though. Come introduce yourself at http://is.gd/liWE
My name is Jason, and I’ve got Aspergers. Had it all my life but just finally got diagnosed after I started working with the Gimp Girl Community in Second Life. Meeting Aspie adults just made it clear that there was a fit. Got formally diagnosed last fall, and am working with my employer to be accommodated. Aspies get obsessive interests. My two bigs ones are vampires and learning. Well, it is the same to me. Learning lead me to learn how to learn, and then teach others how to learn, and then study learning. Got my PhD in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, and am now a professor, specializing in social technologies for young children (and knowledge transmission in vampire research literature). I’m learning about adaptive design using recycled materials (http://adaptivedesign.org), and hope to build a computer out of cardboard this spring. I’ve been online since 1987… and have been using computers as cognitive prostheses since then. Without a computer I’d be… I have no idea but I don’t want to think about it.
