We can’t necessarily assume all these new things will be accessible just because it’s Apple. We must always stay vigilant as a community. Not too long ago, Microsoft forgot to include features in Windows Phone 7 to enable screen readers to make the OS and apps accessible. Shame.

We know much of iLife 11, including Garage Band, is accessible with VoiceOver. The same holds true for the Facetime beta.

Unfortunately, Jobs said nothing about accessibility for the upcoming Mac App Store or OSX Lion. We can assume they’ll be accessible, but that would be speculation. We need to see at least a statement about Apple’s ongoing accessibility commitment when major changes of this nature are announced.

I have asked Apple to provide such a statement, even if they can’t or don’t choose to provide specific details beyond a simple statement of plans to continue the accessibility commitment.

A letter has been drafted and e-mailed to accessibility@apple.com and Steve Jobs.

If I don’t receive a response by the end of this week, it’ll go out by certified mail. It simply states some history involving Windws Phone 7 and Apple’s previous issues with lack of support for outSpoken for OSX, and asks Apple to make that public commitment.

I’ll keep the community updated as things develop.

Interesting read. Though I am an Apple user, I believe that many of their applications are going to come with increased sound and visual perception with those of us who have problems in those areas, plus making their interface easier to navigate will have profound effects on the handicap as well.
