Valuable blog post. Curious to know what you think of the accuracy and computer navigation in MacSpeech Dictate?

@Karen: The accuracy of MacSpeech Dictate is fantastic, and the commands that exist work fine for me – the problem with it in my eyes is that the commands aren’t complete enough to use it without the mouse needed at all. There are no commands for moving the mouse, as present in Dragon’s products. The upgrades are arriving steadily though, with fairly significant improvements in each one. I’d predict that it won’t be long until it’s usable for people who need completely hands-free use.

Free utility that has just about saved my school career:
    Emacs predictive text mode.
    http://www.dr-qubit.org/emacs.php

That combined with the built-in dvorak keyboard layout and mouse gestures/keyboard shortcuts has made academic work possible for me again.

The one downside is that you do need to install and compile the package in order to run it, so it does require a small amount of technical savy (or the one-time assistance of your neighborhood CS geek) to get started. You can install your own dictionary (I haven’t bothered) to make it more customized to your needs/vocabulary.

My essentials which are set for auto start up are keystrokes, firefox and mail.

Having firefox start up from where I left off helps me remember what I was doing and wanting to do next.

I like how iPhoto can put pics straight into email for you which I use frequently to send photos to friends and I have a copy of Ms Office for Mac which was on my old iBook when I bought it.

Just archived it, copied it to an external hard drive then put it on my iMac as this one is connected to the printer, in case I want to write a letter. I have a little label printer too thats handy for addressing envelopes as writing is getting difficult from the Ataxia.

Other thing i use mostly is my little Flip camera to take little clips of my dog just plugs into USB and is compatible with iMovie if I want to edit it and get all technical!

My Joystick Plus has made computing less frustrating as i can have it on faster speed to get from one end of big screen to other or slow it right down if I only want to move a small amount for finer detail work (photo/video editing etc) Its great cos I still move joystick same amount but cursor only moves a fraction onscreen which is great if your fine motor co-ordination is severely dodgy!

Can also select only up/down or left/right to get more accurate movements.

I found Keystrokes meets most of my needs as they are mainly based around typing so the word prediction and abbreviation expansion is good for spontaneous chat.
Panels of pre-stored sentences also speed up routine tasks like letter writing and form filling for entering the same information each time.

I love the fact you can design your own panels/keyboards from scratch, a feature I didnt find when looking at Windows stuff (before I switched).

@SR: Thanks for the information about the Emacs Predictive Text stuff – I wasn’t aware of that previously. I’d love you to write about it for ATMac if you’re interested!

@Kati: Thanks for explaining your setup. I’m going to email you about it – hang in there.
