Super OS X Menubar Items

OS X Leopard Logo

Menubar items (also known as menu extras, status items, and menulets) are those little things on the top right of your menubar. [...] This is not a complete list of menubar items because I left out the bad ones.

For users who primarily use the mouse, having often-used things available with few mouse movements or clicks is an important time saver. Menu extras can put obscure things that you need within easy reach and this website offers a list of most of the best ones.

I use a bunch of menu extras myself, including:

  • The menu extra available with Skype for controlling my status.
  • The menu extra available with iGTD which is a bit like a “to do” list on steroids. Helps me compensate for my memory problems – I write everything down.
  • PTHPasteboard – remembers the last 10 things that I copied to the clipboard and lets me paste them back.
  • The world clock and several monitors from iStat Menus
  • OS X’s built in volume-control slider, which you can turn on from the “Sound” section of the System Preferences.

They save me a lot of hassle and bother and let me get more stuff done. After all, isn’t that what we all want?
