I already wrote about TextExpander, but here’s a little more information from Lifehacker about what text expansion is and why it can save keyboard users time and energy:
Save Time With Text Substitution is a general introduction which mentions both Mac and Windows programs for text substitution.
TextExpander Gets Even Better is an in-depth look at the new features in TextExpander 2.0 including lots of screen shots.
TypeIt4Me is another application along the same lines. I don’t know much about it, I’d be interested to hear about the features of each and how they compare.
I don’t use either of these because I use the less powerful (but enough for me) text substitution in KeyStrokes when I am using a regular keyboard, but if I typed on a physical keyboard more often I would be using it.
