Weekend Round-Up: Akismet, AT Carnival, Heat Waves

eMac in a manual wheelchairAkismet is a plug-in that helps prevent spam comments from being posted on blogs without users needing to log in or use any type of CAPTCHAs. This makes it ideal for a blog where lots of the commenters have disabilities. I didn’t use it for the first little while I was blogging, but I’ve used it for over a year now. I noticed this week that we had passed a big milestone with Akismet:

Caught Spam. Akismet has caught 20,007 spam since you first installed it.

That’s a lot of spam that isn’t in my comments – thank you to the Akismet team!

Lon Thornberg has announced the theme of the February AT blog carnival Perfect Pairings.

Highlighting combinations of assistive technology that work together. Do you have a software switch combo? How about a device and switch you have used together, a website that provides resources or software you have used with a piece of equipment or strategies for using various keyboards or scanners with text to speech?

We have lots of AT we pair with things and find useful but don’t think about sharing. What we take for granted and use all the time might be the solution that someone else has been looking for and hasn’t found.

There are lots of great possibilities here, so hopefully he’ll get lots of submissions!

There’s been a massive heat wave down here in Melbourne, so all I want to do right now is melt. I think everybody down here is in a semi-coma from the heat. Stay tuned for more coherency (hopefully) next week!
